Evergreen MFR-The Magic of Movement: Ending Power-Based Personal Violence- Presenter: Samantha Dickens, MSW, PEACe Coordinator, SIUE
Abstract: Moments of Action will include a brief history of social justice movements around power-based personal violence such as the #MeToo, Time’s Up, and It’s On Us movements including the missions of these movements. These are powerful moments in our history that rely on people intervening en masse to make a difference, and this requires developing intervention skills and the confidence to use those skills. Following this brief history will be interactive activities that help RAs develop skills to intervene if they see a problematic behavior that can lead to domestic/dating violence, sexual assault, and/or stalking or to intervene after an incident has occurred. We will briefly discuss how to proactively intervene which includes joining a movement such as MeToo, Time’s Up, or It’s On Us.
Evergreen Classroom 284-Managing Difficult Dialogues- Presenter: Courtney Boddie, PhD, Director, SIUE Counseling Services
As an RA, you function in a front-line, first-responder capacity. As such, it is necessary to establish or refine the skills useful in managing challenging conversations with others across lines of differing cultural identities. This session will review the basics and offer a guided opportunity to practice everything from recognizing the need for a difficult dialogue, to having one and managing its outcome.
Evergreen Classroom 285-Community Action: Getting involved at the local, state, and national level- Presenter: Nate Keener, Action Metro East
This session will look at how to navigate the political landscape at the local, state, and national level. How do you start a letter-writing campaign? Are you registered to vote? How do you find out the truth about candidates? How can you get involved and get your residents involved?
